Cotton crop plays significant role in national
economy:

Prof. Dr. Qaiser Mushtaq Vice Chancellor the Islamia University of
Bahawalpur has said that cotton crop plays significant role in national
economy. The university is contributing in nation economy by introducing new
verities of cotton congenial to local climatic conditions producing better
yield. The Vice Chancellor expressed these views during visit of cottons field
grown for research purpose by department of Plant Breeding and Genetics,
University College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. He said
Bahawalpur is the house of cotton crop, however our cotton grower is facing
problems of high temperature, water scarcity and diseases like curl leaf virus.
IUB introduced cotton varieties, IUB-222 and IUB-13 and MM-58 are giving good
results under drought, seasonal variations and crop diseases. These cotton
varieties have not only helped our farmer to improve his financial condition
but also providing good raw material for textile industry hence contributing in
economic stability. Dr. Muhammad Iqabl Chairman Department of Plant Breeding
and Genetics on this occasion said that IUB Cotton variety IUB-13 has achieved
top position in latest trials conducted at Punjab Saeed Corporation Khanewal
for showing high productivity.
