Engineer Baleegh-ur-Rehman has said that Punjab government is  formulating new
agriculture policy which would revolutionize agriculture sector to meet future
challenges of food security. He made these remarks while addressing as a chief
guest at a seminar regarding Punjab agriculture policy jointly organized by Agriculture
University Faisalabad, Nawaz Sharif agriculture university Multan and regional
agriculture research institute Bahawalpur, here at Bahawalpur.
                "New agriculture policy would boost per acre
yield ensure food security and by improving quantitative and qualitative
agriculture output would reduce incidence of poverty in the country",
Minister of State Baleegh-ur-Rehman noted.
                Minister of state said that under the dynamic
leadership of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif sustained innovative
intervention into agriculture sector would synchronize this vital component of
economy to the modern trends which would boost agriculture output.
                "Government was constructing university of
animal sciences at Bahawalpur which would institutionalize research and
development in the agriculture sector by producing highly skilled manpower
which modernize this vital sector", Minister of State maintained.
                He further said that government attached special significance
to higher education which is practically reflected by enhancing budgetary
allocation to the tune of Rs. 91 billion from 41 billion during the last 4
years. He further said that government's consistent endeavor would end load
shedding by 2018. He highly appreciated the dynamic and vibrant role played by
Vice chancellor agriculture university Faisalabad Professor Dr. Iqrar Ahmad
Khan for his visionary guidance regarding formulating new agriculture policy
which was at its final stage.

Professor Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that Punjab government was engaged in
formulating new agriculture policy which is aimed to make agriculture yet again
a profitable enterprise. He further maintained that it is imperative to have
modern policy instruments which should not only increase per acre agriculture
output but should also mitigate the problems faced by agriculture community.
                "Per acre yield increase is dependent upon
adopting modern agriculture practices which include:- using quality seeds,
modern agriculture equipments, proper use of fertilizers and pesticides",
He maintained.
                He further said that government's new agriculture
policy envisioned introducing modern agriculture methods by increasing productivity
of the crops introducing alternative crops to mitigate post harvest damages
streamlining market economy and to address value addition issues through
sustained, tangible and result oriented policy framework. He said that at 1947
the total population of Pakistan was 35 million which stands now at 200 million
which requires a modern policy framework regarding food security.

Professor Dr. Asif Ali said that the fertile land was consumed for constructing
new housing projects. He highly appreciated the new initiative of the
government for taking steps to formulate new agriculture policy. 
                The seminar was attended by Vice Chancellor Islamia
University of Bahawalpur Professor Dr. Qaiser Mushtaq, former MNA Makhdoom Ahmad
Alam Anwer, former deputy speaker Punjab Assembly Mian Usman Abbasi, Habibullah
Bhutta, Azra Shaikh, Abdul Rehman and a large number of peasants' community.
                The representative of agriculture community paid rich
tribute to the bold and innovative policy instruments proposed by Professor Dr.
Iqrar Ahmad Khan in new agriculture policy.
