BAHAWALPUR = FOOD INFLATION. PRICE CONTROL MECHANISM SHOULD BE STRENGTHENED BY GOVERNMENT
MARKET PRICES OF KITCHEN/EATABLE ITEMS ARE ON HIGH SIDE. CITY DISTRICT GOVERNMENT IN DEEP SLUMBER.
PRICE CONTROL COMMITTEE MUST BE ACTIVATED PROPERLY.
Food
is the basic need of all living creatures in the contemporary world.
The continuous rise in the prices of food items is termed as FOOD
INFLATION and unfortunately the situation is accelerating in Pakistan surprisingly.
Today
dear readers
, through this column, I would like to grab your
attention towards very much sensitive matter, that is FOOD INFLATION
& ADULTERATION in our city due to no check & balance
over this neglected issue by concerned authorities. As it is universal
or fundamental right of every country's citizens that they must serve
hygienic eatables by their Government which is basic responsibility of
Rulers.
But regretfully observed that
the officials of City District Government Bahawalpur are unaware
of the prices of daily consumable items like meat, pulses,
firewood, coal, rice, milk, vegetables, fruits, poultry
items and other several items sold in city markets & through
different type of vendors who are independent in fixation of rates
according to the areas or localities of city, for example if a vendor
sale out vegetables on handcart in the area of Model Town A then
rate of vegetables reached on sky and if same vendor in area of Model
Town C or another areas then rates will be on reasonable level.
Time
to time, the District Price Control Committee has issued official price
list of daily consumable items, in which officials have fixed the
prices of mutton, beef , chicken , vegetables , milk , yogurt &
other grossery items but only for paper work. In papers the
local management is showing that all kitchen items are available on low
prices but the story is quite different.
Market
Committee provides periodically a printed list of fixed rates to
traders consists on eatables items but shop keepers even don't care
about the printed rates giving by authorities, but they only frame that
rate list and hanged over it just for formality as a
Sign Board. Whenever a Customer debates for purchase required
items according to rate list, shopkeepers become harsh and says to
customers, you may go to some other shop and purchase on satisfactory
rates. Customers, especially those having low income are perturbed over
the ever - increasing prices of daily consumable items, because shop
keepers are charging high prices as there is no check &
balance by price control Magistrates, in fact the CDGB is only relying
on paper work rather than checking violations of price in the market.
The
sale of cut fruits & uncovered eatables are going unchecked by the
concerned authorities and giving rise to contagious diseases like
typhoid cholera and gastrointestinal etc etc. These illegal vendors
which have mushroomed at every nook & corner of the city are serving
food on stalls and small carts who never care to serve hygienic food to
public but charged high rates. There are so many Restaurants
and several Bakeries open in the city for fast food but they
are also provide unhygienic and stale stuff to people because of
no check authorities, few of small eateries (Roadside
hotels) which called in local language (DHABA ) procure contaminated
water for cooking and washing crockery. On the other hand, on butcher
shops we have to buy meat on high prices of butcher, but with full of
water for increasing weight of meat.
People are
compelled to eat adulterated and faulty food as well as grossery
items like spices , chilli & turmeric powder , salt &
specially tea. Due to few people of corrupt Mafia of District
Administration appointed their favourite persons in Price Control
Committee only for paper work to obtained their
benefits, because these so called price control committee members
are not social nor active persons that's why there is no
implementation of laws.
Due to above
critical circumstances, protection of consumers interest &
precious lives would be priority of the administration / government
and availability of eatables would be ensured at the
control rates because it is requirement of time that, on Tehsil
& District level Price Control Committees should be activated and
authorized to curb these issues by imposing heavy penalties to
delinquent shopkeepers and pay frequent visits for the relief
of common people by appointing of honest pious and
dutiful persons.
Assistant Commissioners & Magistrates would continue price checking drive in their areas
besides meetings with the traders to solve their problems.
In
this respect I would like to request to concerned authorities and
Chief Minister Punjab Mr.Shahbaz Sharif that direct relevant
departments to formulate contingency plans for possible
price hikes due to fluctuations in demand of food items and it needs to
be controlled by strategic planning adopted by Government.
At
last , in my opinion a strong monitoring system should be established
on different levels in order to have a sound evaluation of the process
on every stage.
