BAHAWALPUR(PR)Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur organized a two day workshop on Challenges and Solutions for the Integrated Management of Desert Ecosystem. The main focus of this workshop was to strengthen the field based research to sustain desert ecosystem and environment by overcoming desertification to ensure the human health and wildlife conservation. The delegates also discussed current issues of Cholistan desert and their possible solutions to get maximum benefits by utilizing available resources to improve desert ecosystem. Prof. Dr. Qaiser Mushtaq, Vice Chancellor, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur was the chief guest of the concluding session. He appreciated Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies initiative for organizing workshop promoting field-based research strategies. He emphasized that there should be a multi-disciplinary team of stakeholders that work alongside the targeted communities. He hoped that the workshop would be helpful to foster stronger research ties between the scientists representing different institutions. The focal person of the workshop, Prof. Dr. Shazia Anjum briefed the audience about fragile ecosystem of deserts losing their native flora and fauna and also losing its value for hosting migratory birds. The main reason behind the on-going degradation is lack of effective management. The desert ecosystem is facing pressure of increasing human population and their livestock. It also lacks scientific solutions, there is a gap between science and expanding human dimensions. The key resource person Ashiq Ahmad Khan elaborated the objectives of conference. He suggested to develop an understanding of the management issues that are getting harder for managers to resolve without the support of targeted and quality research.
